Goats

IMG-20110706-00105Our unregistered British Toggenburg goats are all related – from great granny Scallywag, through the generations of her daughters and grand daughters, Paisley and Poplin, Linen and Lace, Denim, Silk, Satin, Aida, Muslin … they live together in good natured bossiness, with a good deal of conversation, and the odd outbreak of head butting – just a normal family.
We milk once a day, as this more than supplies our needs – and we leave kids with their mothers until they wean naturally – at the age of about 8 – 10 weeks, we shut all the toddlers up in the nursery for the night, milk the mums in the morning, and for the rest of the day, the milk bar is open.
We believe passionately in raw milk, and all raw milk products, but are not as yet able to sell it for human consumption as we do not have the resources to set up a dairy which would pass muster with the powers that be. We do sell some milk for dogs and other pets – raw milk is said to help support dogs with immune challenges.
Our dream is for the Homespun Herd to be a fully fledged dairy herd, and to supply raw milk, yoghurt and cheese to the public. Watch this space.
